Welcome to Continental Dance Clubs,

April, Tips of the Month.
Presented to you by Felicia Lee Banks, Director.

Planning on dancing at your wedding?  Then all BRIDES READ THIS!!!

1.)  Mermaid Dresses make it very difficult to dance.  If this is the style of your dress, you may want to try to dance at your fitting, to ma ke sure your gown is not TOO narrow.
2.)  Make sure you have a bussle for your train!  Tripping during your first dance isn't quite the memory you want!
3.)  If you are going to take dance lessons, practice in your crinoline or hoop, or whatever undergarments you will be wearing.  This will give you and your fiance a great idea of how it will feel your wedding day.
4.)  Break-in your wedding shoes!  Wear them during your dance lesson.  You may want to consider purchasing dance shoes for your wedding.  They will make it much easier to dance and are extremely comfortable since they conform to your foot!
5.)  After spending time and money on dance lessons, you want to make sure all of your guests see your first dance.  Please ask your bridal party to either sit at their seats or stand behind the head table, as opposed to lining the sides of the dance floor.  This will block your audience's view, and that would be such a waste!

HOW TO FIND A GREAT STUDIO FOR YOU:

1. Referral, word of mouth.

2. Reputation, amount of time they have survived in this business.  Studios that are in business for a few years could easily disappear (with your money).  New studios don't quite have the hang of running a business and sometimes rely on newly trained students to conduct the lessons.

3. Never shop a studio (or a service) by price.  You get what you pay for.  Sometimes you learn LOTS of STEPS that are poorly executed and lack technique.  You WILL GET ATTENTION on the dance floor for all the wrong reasons. Examples of poor technique are:  pigeon-toed steps, boll-legged cowboy legs (on women, too), hips going in the wrong direction, bad posture, excessively strong hold or grip, just to name a few.  Some of these dancers look like they are counting, easily confused if you speak to them while they are concentrating, and hardly ever smile. An incompetent teacher is clueless as how to correct even one thing.  But, hey, the PRICE IS RIGHT!  Sometimes advanced students decide to open a studio, and to compensate for their lack of experience and teaching ability, they offer lessons for  a lot cheaper than the studio they just left. Sometimes all the instructors teach, dance, and look alike.  No originality.

4.  When you walk into a studio for the first time you should like what you SEE.  Is there a variety of students? Are there young, middle-age and older students?   How about slim, heavy-set, short, tall, and ethnically diverse students? Are there singles, couples and groups? Does the studio have a main ballroom?  How about private teaching rooms?
You should HEAR giggling, laughter, clapping, finger snapping and conversations.
You should FEEL good immediately.  You should not have to warm up to a studio - the temperature should be just right when you walk in.

5. You should be ACKNOWLEDGED when you enter and be treated with respect and genuine warmth.  The staff should make you feel important. If the studio is in business for a long time they must be doing something right.

6.  If you walk into a studio and all the professionals and students look like competition stars maybe the emphasis of this studio is on competing and less on social dancing.  Is this for you?

7.  Is the staff is a bit cool, a little full of themselves, their noses up with an air of smugness?  Maybe they should be on stage performing instead of interacting with real people who mustered up the courage to take dance lessons since they lack confidence on the dance floor.

TIP FOR MEN:
If you want to meet a woman, sign up for dance lessons.
Just ask her if she would like to dance...it doesn't get easier than that!

TIP FOR WOMEN:
Don't fake it! If he can't dance, don't lie and say you enjoyed the dance.
Just smile when it's over.

TIP FOR MALE DANCERS:
When dancing with a woman for the first time, don't do the latest super duper steps you just learned. Start with easy steps first and work your way up to where she feels comfortable and no further.
If you make her feel comfortable, she'll want to dance with you again.

REALITY FOR MEN:
Your good looks, great body, charm and credit card will get you a phone number and a dance the first time if you're lucky; but if you don't make a great first dance impression, she will be looking for someone who can when the dance is over. You can’t fool her. She will know in the first few seconds whether or not you can dance.

REALITY FOR WOMEN:
You cannot hide behind your looks, great smile, and personality on the dance floor doing Mickey Mouse steps thinking he can't tell.
You cannot fake real dancing like you can freestyle dancing.
